In Pennsylvania The death penalty is allowed and since 1976 has executed 3 inmates. Before 1976 1040 inmates have been executed. 1976 is important becuase that was the year the death penalty was re-instituted and 1995, P.A saw its first execution in 1995. Currently there are 222 inmates on death row, 5 of them are women.

Six people have been freed from death row due to evidence that proved their innocence. Two places in Pennsylvania practice lethal injection and they are Sci Greene and SCI Graterford.

Pennsylvania's originally used public hanging as capital punishment in the 1600's. In 1794 William Bradford fought the death penalty and was able to get it reduced down to only having capital punishment brought down upon a criminal for First Degree murder, this was also the first time murder was classified into degrees. Then in 1834 Pennsylvania was the first state in the Union to abolish the death penalty.

1913 showed the debut of the electric chair or also known as, "Old Smokey" in the U.S. Pennsylvania did not adopt the electric chair until 1915 when convicted murderer John Talap was sentenced to Capital punishment.

On April 2nd, 1962 Pennsylvania witnessed its last execution due to lethal injection from Elmo Lee Smith. He was the last of 350 to die by Electrair Chair when it was outlawed that same.
